Mum's Journey: Introducing Preet and Aanhad

Preet is a mama and wife who loves all things fashion and lifestyle. Medela recently sat down and had a chat with her talk about all things Motherhood, Medela and raising her gorgeous little man.

Let’s start with the basics. What’s it like being a mum?

Being a mother is the most amazing and fantastic feeling in the world, the moment you find out that you are pregnant, it’s like the whole world shifted. The 9 beautiful months show women’s different dimension of life and how amazing her body is. And as soon as the baby is held to a mother’s chest a woman herself changes as a person and not only physically but emotionally as well. It is like a new journey that mother and her child discover along with their family.

Along with this feeling there is a lot of pain, baby blues, sleepless nights, big belly troubles and weird sense of smell and taste associated.

We know you love Medela products, tell us which is your favourite and why.

The Medela Freestyle Flex Double Electric Breast Pump is my favourite, even though I have only used the single one (The Solo). I would love to get my hands on a double electric pump.
There are a few options and combinations to create!

Breastfeeding. We all know it’s hard, but tell us why you found it hard and how you overcame those issues.

Motherhood challenges women in every way and yet I have not met a single mother to date who has advised me that, “This is something very hard’. It makes a woman strong enough to face everything. The feeling of my body being able to produce my child’s first food and taste made me strong enough to face everything. Especially with Aanhad because we had to stay in hospital for a week I am absolutely grateful to Medela as it made my breastfeeding journey so much easier and made me feel confident. We had Medela since day one and I'm still using it a year later.

Tell the mums out there why breastfeeding worked for you and why you think they should experience this special moment with their own children.

Breastfeeding is kind of an adventure, it is a journey, a feeling that cannot be described in words. Everyone says, "Oh! It makes your bond stronger with your baby." And yes, I agree but it’s not limited to just bonding. It helps a woman express her love through breastfeeding, it gives a mother the ability to sit and watch and praise herself for bringing a little human into the world, it helps a mother to praise herself for being that strong and capable of providing the baby’s first food/meal/liquid gold. P.S let’s not forget the benefits of breastmilk. The bond of breastfeeding stays between a mother and a child for years.

When did you decide to start your pumping journey? Before or after birth? When did you get your first pump and why? Returning to work or wanting Aanhad to received the best nutrition all the time?

The day I found out I was pregnant I was sure I would breastfeed my child and will do the same for my next child, and not only because Aanhad was born during Covid and is our Rainbow Baby (a baby born after a mum suffers a miscarriage, stillbirth or the loss of a baby due to natural casues). From keeping my milk supply up until I started going back work I describe my Medela breast pump as my best friend and it forever will be.

How do you pass the time when you’re breastfeeding? Do you watch TV, or are you scared the light will wake the baby? Do you read? Or is it too hard with one hand?

It is a little hard to focus while pumping with one hand and hence, I am looking into investing into a dual one. But my personal experience is that pumping is always best when you are relaxed, and not too busy to appreciate yourself for all the hard work your body is doing.

We can see you have a love of fashion. It’s hard to remember we are still women who deserve to look and feel amazing after we give birth. What are your top tips to make new mums feel empowered and special?

I was a size 6 before Aanhad and now I am a 10. I remind myself that change is necessary at certain times and what my body has gone through bringing a little human to this world. I need to give my body some time to heal while I enjoy the moments of motherhood, because babies grow up so quickly and once they do, all mother’s feel they haven’t had enough time. You can get your body back anytime and fashion is what you wear and are comfortable in. Don’t let all these fashion labels make you feel to fit in a particular size.

How does your partner help you out with the new baby?

I have been so lucky from day one with my partner taking over house chores and even looking after the baby and giving me time to myself to pump and have small time frames to rest or catch up with a friend for a quick coffee. I am so so lucky to have him.

Tell me three words you would use to describe Medela

Trustworthy, best friend, compassionate

If you can give the mums out there reading this interview one piece of motherly advice, what would it be?

You are absolutely doing everything right, do not think that any other mother is better than you. We have all been there at different stages and you are the best mother that your child has. You are doing one heck of a job which is the best and the hardest job in the world. Be kind to yourself.
