Celebrating My Better Half and His Contribution to My Breastfeeding Journey

I have often talked about the challenges and triumphs of breastfeeding my two daughters. That said, I have not talked much about the person who encouraged, supported and soothed me along the way – my husband Tim. In many ways, he made it all possible...

He is, without a doubt, the biggest reason that I didn’t give up when I was at my wits-end. He kept me going when I was crying over Sophie not gaining weight.

When I thought I couldn’t do another night feed, he would get up and be with me every step of the way. He is always there to tell me what a great job I’m doing. He encourages me to continue doing what I’m doing, especially in my times of doubt.

As a woman, you have the huge and daunting task of carrying the child through pregnancy, bringing him or her into the world through labour and helping the baby to thrive through breastfeeding.

This can, at times, be overwhelming. Yet, with the support of an understanding partner, the beauty of raising a child is shared.

Sometimes I think fathers get a bit of a tough gig. They don’t have the first 9 months of carrying the baby to form that initial bond. Also, the breastfeeding bond is formed between mother and child. Fathers have to work harder to make it happen.

It is amazing to watch the different – yet just as strong - bond that Tim has formed with our children. By choosing to be a part of the journey, he has made himself a key figure in their lives. Without a doubt, one of my favourite things in this world is to watch my husband with our daughters.
